If you’ve ever run a water truck, you know one thing for sure: no two setups are exactly alike. Every chassis is a little different. Every job has its own demands. And every operator has their preferences for how the tank should perform. That’s why at Advantage Custom Water Tanks, we believe in designing and building tanks that fit your truck, your needs, and your worksite.
So how do we go from a blank sheet of steel to a fully tested, job-ready water tank? Let’s walk through the process step by step.

Step 1: Getting to Know Your Truck and Your Needs
It all starts with a conversation. Before we ever cut a piece of metal, we take the time to understand what you’re working with and what you need.
- What make and model is your chassis?
- What kind of jobs will the truck be doing: dust control, compaction, road work?
- How much capacity makes sense for your operation?
- What extras will be needed like hose reels, spray bars, or special pumps?
The better we understand your truck and your work, the better we can design a tank that makes your life easier on the job.
Step 2: Turning Ideas into a Design
Once we’ve got the details, our engineers get to work. Using advanced CAD software, they lay out every detail of your tank. This isn’t just about making it fit—it’s about making it fit perfectly. To see this in detail, check out our Tank Fitting Video!
We design the brackets to line up with your chassis, balance the weight so your truck handles well, and place baffles inside the tank to keep water from sloshing around. Every accessory you want, whether it’s a hose reel, ladder, or custom spray system is built right into the design.
By the time the design is finalized, we’ve got a virtual blueprint that shows exactly how your tank will perform in the real world.
Step 3: Cutting, Welding, and Assembly
This is where the fun really begins. Once the design is approved, our fabrication team starts shaping the raw steel into a tank that’s made to last.
- Large sheets of metal are cut with precision equipment.
- The curved sides of the tank are rolled and formed.
- Baffles are welded in place to stabilize the load.
- Every seam is welded tight and inspected for strength.
Finally, we coat the tank to protect against rust and corrosion, giving it a long working life even in tough conditions.
Step 4: Bringing It All Together
Once the tank itself is complete, it’s time to turn it into a fully functioning water system. All the plumbing and accessories are installed, and the tank is mounted securely to your chassis (if you’ve provided your chassis… if not, we ship the tank as needed).
That means pumps, valves, spray bars, and hose reels get hooked up and tested. Ladders, fenders, and safety rails are added.
By the end of this stage, you’ve got a water truck that looks as good as it performs.
Step 5: Testing, Testing, Testing
Here’s where we separate ourselves from the “good enough” builders. Before any water truck leaves our shop, it goes through a full round of testing.
- The tank is filled and pressurized to make sure there are zero leaks.
- Pumps are run at full capacity to confirm performance.
- Spray bars and nozzles are tested for proper coverage.
- Safety features like ladders and handrails are checked.
We don’t just want your tank to work, we want it to work flawlessly. Because out in the field, there’s no time for downtime.
Step 6: Delivery and Beyond
Once your tank passes every test, it’s ready to roll. We deliver it to you fully operational, so you can put it straight to work (or in other cases, we ship the tank directly to you, along with clear instructions for mounting on your chassis).
But our job doesn’t stop once the truck leaves the shop. We stand behind every tank we build with:
- Clear instructions and support for your operators.
- After-sale service if you ever need parts or advice.
- Warranty coverage for peace of mind.
We know that when you’re counting on your equipment every day, you need a partner who stands with you for the long haul.
Why Advantage?
At the end of the day, a water tank is more than just a big piece of steel bolted to a truck. It’s the heartbeat of your operation: keeping dust down, keeping projects on schedule, and keeping crews productive.
When you choose Advantage Custom Water Tanks, you get:
- A tank built for your exact chassis – not something that “almost” fits.
- Craftsmanship you can trust – from welds to coatings, built to last.
- Performance you can count on – because we test it like your job depends on it.
- Support from a team that cares – before, during, and long after delivery.
That’s the Advantage difference.
